Cohabitation

Cohabitation – What Can Private Investigators Do?

  • Private investigators are hired to obtain evidence of suspected co-habitation.  More specifically, the investigator is hired to create a report or record that documents evidence of the eight (8) factors outlined in the New Jersey Alimony Reform Act as indicators of cohabitation for the purposed of alimony modification.
  • Typically private investigators will examine public records, social media postings and other database information to look for overlapping interests.
  • Once the background is complete and any ‘red-flags’ are located, surveillance is typically necessary to observe.
  • The ultimate goal of the investigation is to help the attorney of the payor spouse demonstrate to the family judge with as much relevant detail as possible that cohabitation is occurring and the dependent spouse is economically benefiting from the arrangement
